How to prevent duct problems

  • Do not store boxes on flexible ducts in the attic or the crawl space. A crushed duct carries little air.
  • After a remodel, plumbing work or electrical work, have the ducts checked. They are often moved or disconnected by accident.
  • Keep the vents and the return grilles open and uncovered.
  • Change the air filter on time. A blocked filter raises the pressure in the ducts and opens weak joints. The filter guide explains the choices.
  • Do not use cloth duct tape on a joint. It dries out and falls off.

Signs to call us about

Signs you need duct repair

  • Rooms that never get warm in winter or cool in summer, even when the system runs
  • Dusty vents or visible dust around registers
  • High energy bills despite working furnace and AC equipment
  • Whooshing, rattling or whistling from the ductwork
  • Air blowing into attics, crawl spaces or unconditioned areas

Your ductwork moves heated and cooled air from the equipment to the rooms. When it leaks, that air ends up in the attic, the crawl space or the walls instead. SquareHVAC is based in Hillside and serves communities within approximately 30 road miles. We inspect, repair and seal ductwork for homes.

The written quote

We explain what we found and what it costs, in writing, with parts and labor listed separately. You review it; you decide. Work only begins once you approve.

All services

Why duct repair matters

  • Energy. Leaky ducts send conditioned air into attics, crawl spaces and walls. Sealing the leaks means more of it reaches the living areas.
  • Comfort. Sealed ducts deliver balanced airflow to every room, instead of some rooms getting too much and others none.
  • Air quality. Gaps in return ducts can pull dust and pollutants from basements and attics into the air you breathe.
  • Equipment. A system that has to work harder to make up for leaky ducts wears out faster.

What happens during the visit

We provide a written quote for approval before work begins, with parts and labor listed separately.

  1. Step 1

    Inspection.

We inspect the ducts and locate gaps, disconnections, crushed sections and joints that pass through unconditioned spaces.

  2. Step 2

    Sealing.

Joints and seams are sealed with mastic sealant or metallic tape, including around boots, boxes and registers.

  3. Step 3

    Insulation where needed.

Exposed ducts in attics, crawl spaces or garages are insulated so they stop losing heat in winter and gaining it in summer.

  4. Step 4

    Testing.

After the work we check airflow at the vents and that the system runs without excessive cycling.

Common questions about duct repair

How much does duct repair cost?
The cost depends on how much of the ductwork needs sealing, how accessible it is and whether sections need replacing. We assess the system, explain what we found and provide a written quote for approval before work begins.
How long does a duct repair visit take?
It depends on how much of the ductwork needs sealing and how easy it is to reach. We tell you the expected time in the written quote, before you decide.
Do you also clean ducts?
Yes. Duct cleaning is a separate service. Cleaning and sealing solve different problems, and we tell you which one you need after the inspection.
