Thinking about a new furnace?

A new furnace is a decision for many years, so it helps to understand the choices first. Our guide to 80 AFUE and 96 AFUE furnaces explains the two common efficiency levels in clear language: what changes in the gas bill, in the venting and in comfort. When you are ready, we look at your home and give you a written quote.

Check the heating system before choosing a replacement

Some Glen Ellyn homes use a furnace and ducts; others may have a boiler and radiators. Identify which system you have before comparing repair and replacement options. A room that feels cold beside a warm radiator raises a different question from weak air coming through a vent. The year a home was built does not establish its present equipment, especially after renovations, so the recommendation should follow an inspection of the actual system.

The Village has different permit paths for these projects. Its guidance lists a small building permit with plan review for a new or replacement furnace, air conditioner or heat pump in a home, while a replacement boiler or water heater uses an over-the-counter permit. If you are planning work, ask which path fits the proposed scope and whether changes to venting or distribution are included. Our boiler service page and heating installation page explain those options separately.
