See smoke, flames or signs of a fire? Leave the building, stay out and call 911. If there is no fire and it is safe to use the controls, switch the system off and call SquareHVAC.

Quick checks before you call

  • Check the thermostat: is it set to heat or cool, and is the set point where you expect?
  • Check the filter: a clogged filter limits airflow. Replace it if it is visibly dirty.
  • Check the power: look at the breaker and the equipment switch near the unit.
  • Check the airflow: hold a hand at a supply register and feel whether air is moving.
  • Check the outdoor unit: clear leaves and debris from around it.

Signs to call us about

Common heat pump problems

  • Ice on the outdoor unit that does not melt. A thin layer of frost in winter is normal, and the heat pump melts it by itself. Thick ice that stays means the defrost is not working.
  • Cool air in heating mode. The heat pump may be stuck in cooling, or it may be low on refrigerant.
  • It heats but does not cool, or cools but does not heat. The part that switches between the two modes may have failed.
  • It runs all the time. On a very cold day this is normal. On a mild day it is not.
  • The electricity bill jumps in winter. The backup heat may be running too often, which uses much more electricity than the heat pump itself.
  • It switches on and off every few minutes. The cause can be the thermostat, the airflow or the refrigerant charge.

When a heat pump stops heating in winter or cooling in summer, you need the real problem found, not a guess. SquareHVAC is based in Hillside and serves communities within approximately 30 road miles. We diagnose and repair heat pumps for homes and businesses across the Chicago suburbs.

What heat pump service covers

Maintenance

One bookable visit a year, ideally before the season the system struggles in: coil cleaning, airflow checks, electrical connection inspection and thermostat calibration.

Replacement

When a repair no longer makes sense, we install replacement heat pumps with a written quote before work begins. Comparing new systems? Our guide to HSPF4 vs HSPF5 explains which heating score applies in our climate.

We aim to arrive within 2 hours from the time you call, depending on the distance to your location and current availability. Emergency service is available 24/7, including Sundays. Non-emergency visits outside routine service hours are scheduled for the next working period.

What the cost depends on

The cost depends on the failed component, parts availability, system access and labor. Our guide on what HVAC repair costs and what drives the price explains the factors.

The written quote

We explain what we found and what it costs, in writing, with parts and labor listed separately. You review it; you decide. Work only begins once you approve.

Common questions about heat pump repair

Can you repair heat pumps in cold Illinois winters?
Yes. We repair the winter-specific failures: auxiliary heat strips, defrost cycles and refrigerant issues.
Is heat pump repair worth it, or should I replace the system?
It depends on the age of the system, what failed and how often it has failed before. We explain both options and what each involves, and you decide.
What brands do you repair?
All major residential brands, including ductless mini-splits and traditional split heat pumps.
