Settings that help air quality first

  • Fan setting. On Auto, the fan runs only while the system heats or cools. Some thermostats have a Circulate setting that runs the fan for part of each hour. This moves more air through the filter.
  • Dry mode. Many ductless units and room air conditioners have a Dry or Dehumidify setting. It removes moisture from the air. Damp air helps mold and dust mites.
  • Temperature. A steady setting keeps humidity steadier than large swings up and down.
  • Filter. No setting helps if the filter is dirty. Check it every month. Our filter guide explains how to choose one.

Signs to call us about

Signs the air needs attention

  • Dust settles again within a day or two of cleaning.
  • A musty or stale smell when the system runs.
  • Allergy symptoms that are worse at home than elsewhere.
  • An air cleaner whose filter or UV bulb is past its replacement date.

Indoor air can be more polluted than outdoor air, because the house traps what comes in and what the household itself produces. If you are dealing with allergy symptoms, persistent dust or stale air, air purification may help. SquareHVAC is based in Hillside and serves communities within approximately 30 road miles. We install and maintain whole-home air cleaning systems for homes and businesses.

What air purification is

Air purification removes airborne contaminants — dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, bacteria and volatile organic compounds — from indoor air. A true HEPA filter captures at least 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns in size, the size that is hardest to catch; that is the standard that defines HEPA (US EPA, checked October 2026).

Unlike a basic HVAC filter, a dedicated purification system keeps cleaning the air as it circulates, lowering the concentration of pollutants instead of catching only part of them.

What we install

Whole-house air purification

Air cleaning integrated with the existing HVAC system, so every room is treated continuously, without the noise and floor space of portable units.

HEPA filtration

High-efficiency filtration that captures the small particles standard filters miss, for homes and businesses.

UV air purification

Ultraviolet light systems inside the HVAC equipment target biological contaminants — mold, bacteria and viruses — as they pass through.

Activated carbon filtration

For homes with odor concerns or chemical sensitivities: carbon filters adsorb gases, VOCs and smells that particle filters cannot capture.

If you have tried the settings listed under “Settings that help air quality first” and the air still feels stale, dusty or damp, an air quality product may help.

Where air purification helps

Homes: allergy and asthma sufferers, homes with pets, families with young children or elderly members, and households with cooking or smoke odor concerns.

Businesses: our commercial work covers offices, retail, restaurants and multifamily buildings. See commercial HVAC service for the commercial process.

Common questions about air purification

Do air purifiers really make a difference?
The US EPA summarizes the research on its air-cleaner page: air cleaners can reduce indoor air pollution, but they cannot remove all pollutants from it (US EPA, checked October 2026).
How often do air purification filters need to be replaced?
It depends on the filter type and how much the system runs: pre-filters and carbon filters more often, HEPA media less often, UV bulbs on the manufacturer's schedule. We give you the schedule for the equipment we install.
Will an air purifier help with pet allergies?
It can. HEPA filtration captures pet dander, which is one of the common triggers. It works best alongside regular grooming and cleaning.
Is professional installation necessary?
Portable units are plug-and-play. Whole-house and integrated systems need professional installation for correct airflow, electrical connections and compatibility with your HVAC equipment.
