Quick checks before you call

  • Check the thermostat: is it set to heat or cool, and is the set point where you expect?
  • Check the filter: a clogged filter limits airflow. Replace it if it is visibly dirty.
  • Check the power: look at the breaker and the equipment switch near the unit.
  • Check the airflow: hold a hand at a supply register and feel whether air is moving.
  • Check the outdoor unit: clear leaves and debris from around it.

Signs to call us about

When the EPA suggests duct cleaning

  • Substantial visible mold growth inside hard-surface ducts or HVAC components
  • Vermin infestation in the ducts
  • Excessive dust or debris that is actually being released from supply registers

Your air ducts run behind the walls, delivering heated and cooled air to every room. Over time they collect dust, allergens and debris, and some of it recirculates each time the system runs. SquareHVAC is based in Hillside and serves communities within approximately 30 road miles. We clean the whole duct system — supply and return ducts, trunk lines and accessible HVAC components — for homes.

Dryer vent cleaning

We also clean dryer vents. Lint builds up in the vent over time. A blocked vent makes the dryer slow, and lint in a hot vent is a fire risk. Call us if clothes take longer to dry than they used to, or if the dryer or the laundry room gets very hot.

The written quote

We explain what we found and what it costs, in writing, with parts and labor listed separately. You review it; you decide. Work only begins once you approve.

What duct cleaning does

  • Air quality. When confirmed debris inside the ducts is being released into the rooms, cleaning that buildup can reduce what circulates. Duct cleaning alone does not promise improved health, lower energy use or better efficiency.
  • Airflow. Heavy buildup can restrict airflow in places. Cleaning removes the buildup we find; it does not by itself make the whole system more efficient.
  • Odors. Odors trapped in duct dust can recirculate while the system runs. Cleaning helps only when the ducts are the confirmed source of the smell.
  • Housework. Cleaning may help when confirmed debris inside the ducts is being released into the rooms, so there is less dust to settle on the furniture.

Other reasons to ask for an assessment

These are common reasons customers ask us to look, but they are not on the EPA's list shown above under "When the EPA suggests duct cleaning".

  1. 1

You have recently completed renovations that generated construction dust.

  2. 2

You have moved into a home and want to start fresh.

How we clean

We clean the whole system, not only the vents you can see.

  1. 1

    Inspection.

We inspect the ductwork, assess the buildup and note any damage, leaks or access points.

  2. 2

    Negative pressure.

We connect a negative-pressure vacuum system to the ductwork and seal the vents, so suction runs through the whole system.

  3. 3

    Agitation.

Rotating brushes, compressed-air whips and agitation tools loosen the dust from the duct walls, and the vacuum captures it before it can escape into your home.

  4. 4

    Components.

We clean the accessible components: the blower motor, the evaporator coil, the condensate drain pan and the air handler housing.

  5. 5

    Final check.

We verify the ducts are clean and undamaged, and we recommend replacing the air filter to keep them that way. The filter guide explains the choices. We provide a written quote for approval before work begins.

Common questions about duct cleaning

How long does duct cleaning take?
A whole-system cleaning of a typical single-family home takes several hours. We clean all supply and return ducts, the trunk lines and the accessible HVAC components, and that time depends on the size of the system.
Can I clean my own air ducts?
Not effectively. Cleaning the register grilles helps, but the dust sits deep in the trunk lines and the components. Reaching it takes negative-pressure equipment and agitation tools.
Do you also repair or seal ducts?
Yes. We repair and seal ducts and replace damaged sections. Cleaning and sealing solve different problems, and we tell you which one fits after we look.
