Quick checks before you call

Looking after a ductless system

  • Clean the filters. Open the front panel of the indoor unit, take out the filters, wash or vacuum them as the manual says, let them dry and put them back. Check them about once a month when the system is in use.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear. Remove leaves, snow and anything stored against it.
  • Keep the indoor unit clear. Do not put furniture or curtains in front of it.

Signs to call us about

Call us when a ductless unit

  • blows air that is not cold or not warm
  • drips water inside
  • shows a blinking light or an error code
  • makes a new noise or has a musty smell
  • does not answer the remote control

A ductless mini-split heats and cools a room without ducts. SquareHVAC is based in Hillside and serves communities within approximately 30 road miles. The towns we serve are listed on our service area page.

What a ductless system is

A ductless system has two parts: an outdoor unit, and one or more indoor units mounted on a wall or ceiling. A thin set of pipes and cables joins them through a small hole in the wall. Each indoor unit has its own remote control, so each room can have its own temperature.

Most ductless systems are heat pumps: the same unit cools in summer and heats in winter.

If your house already has good ducts, a central system is often the simpler choice. We look at the house and tell you plainly which one fits.

We repair ductless systems of all major brands. We aim to arrive within 2 hours from the time you call, depending on the distance to your location and current availability.

What a technician does during a maintenance visit: cleans the coils, checks the drain, checks the refrigerant and the electrical connections, and tests the system. A musty smell that stays after you cleaned the filters usually means the inside of the unit needs cleaning.

The written quote

We explain what we found and what it costs, in writing, with parts and labor listed separately. You review it; you decide. Work only begins once you approve.

All services

When ductless is a good choice

  • A house with no ducts

for example one heated by a boiler and radiators.

  • A new room

an addition, a finished attic or basement, a sunroom or a garage workshop.

  • One room that is always too hot or too cold

when the main system cannot reach it well.

  • A room you use only sometimes

so you heat or cool it only when you are there.

Installation

  1. Step 1

    Assessment

We look at the rooms, the walls and the place for the outdoor unit.

  2. Step 2

    Recommendation and quote

We recommend the number and size of the indoor units, and provide a written quote for approval before work begins. The quote lists parts and labor separately.

  3. Step 3

    Installation

We mount the units, run the pipes and cables, and connect the system.

  4. Step 4

    Test and handover

We test heating and cooling in each room and show you how to use the remote controls.
